Senior Acolytes, have demonstrated proficiency in regular service at services, showing both competence and dedication in fulfilling their responsibilities. They have participated in special liturgical celebrations and are capable of supporting the full range of parish altar service needs.
Training Expectations
1) Liturgical Prayers
Senior Altar Servers must confidently recite the following prayers from memory:
• All prayers required at the Junior Altar Server level
• Prayer of preparation
• All other acclamations used in the service
2) Church Layout and Sacred Spaces
Senior Altar Servers must be able to identify and understand the significance of:
• All spaces required at the Junior Altar Server level.
• Aumbry
• Sedilia
• Baptistery
• Reredos
3) Sacramentals and Sacred Objects
Senior Altar Servers deepen their knowledge of sacramentals, handling the following with confidence:
• All items and sacramentals from the Apprentice and Junior Altar Server lists.
• Aspergillum
• Aspersorium
• Boat
• Lunette
• Monstrance
• Pyx
• Thurible
4) Liturgical Gestures and Duties
Senior Altar Servers must demonstrate proficiency in:
• All postures and liturgical duties.
• Serving when only one or two servers are present, ensuring proper execution of liturgical roles.
5) Mentorship and Leadership
Senior Altar Servers must take an active role in training and mentoring Junior Altar Servers, helping to guide newer servers in their development.
