Junior Acolytes, are actively learning to master their responsibilities during worship services. Having demonstrated competence in their duties, they continue to deepen their understanding of liturgical roles, refining their reverence and precision in serving at the altar.
Training Expectations
1) Liturgical Prayers. Junior Altar Servers must be able to recite the following prayers from memory:
- All prayers required at the Apprentice level
- Prayer after communion
- At least one Memorial Acclamation
2) Church Layout and Sacred Spaces. Junior Altar Servers must be able to identify and understand the significance of:
- Credence Table
- Nave
3) Items, Sacramentals and Sacred Objects. Junior Altar Servers expand their knowledge beyond the Apprentice level, recognising and properly handling:
- All sacramentals from the Apprentice list
- Book of Gospels
- Lectionary
- Lectern
- Lavabo
- Corporal
- Purificators
- Pall
- Paten
- Lavabo Towel
4) Liturgical Gestures and Responsibilities. Junior Altar Servers must demonstrate competency in:
- Profound Bow
- Head Bow
- Genuflection
- Lighting candles using a candle lighter
- Carrying the processional candles and cross
- Tying a cincture properly
- Using the lavabo correctly
Upon successfully completing demonstrating competence in their training requirements, a Junior may request certification as a Senior Altar Server. This marks their transition to a more active role in the liturgy, with expanded responsibilities at the altar.
Requirements for Advancement
To be recognised as a Senior Altar Server, candidates must:
- Have served at least one calendar year as a Junior Acolyte, with a minimum of 10 services completed.
- Have served in all key positions (Cross bearer and Candle bearer).
- Have assisted in at least two special liturgical services, such as: Easter Vigil, Confirmation Service, Christmas Midnight Mass, etc
